Running With The Bulls Of SEO

What do you think was going through that guy’s mind as he dropped into the street where a hundred or so raging bulls were going to be running? Was he scared? I am not really sure if there is a prize for those who survive, maybe just respect, but apparently it was enough.

Whatever the reason, I am going to go out on a limb and say the ROI is probably not enough. The fact is, he probably just did it because it was popular and so many of his peers were doing it.

Are you an independent thinker?

Its not easy being an SEO Consultant. You have to work in a field where the only consistency seems to be change. You have to be extremely comfortable with change, thrive in that environment. I have found most SEO Consultants to be independent thinkers. That is why I am so confused when I see so many of my peers ready to jump in front of a herd of wild bulls at a moments notice because someone said it was a good idea.

I love to try new things, and I think it is important to do so. However, I didn’t just stop commenting on blogs and make link badges because Randfish said comments “suck” and badges are better. As a matter of fact, I tested it out on a competitive query space and only commented for links. I took the top page in about six weeks.

I am always looking forward and for ways to improve techniques, but I do not just take someone’s word on whether something works or doesn’t work. There is very little legitimate research done in regards to SEO techniques and why they do or do not work.

It is important that we as SEO Consultants develop our own SEO strategy. All though many of our tactics may change there are a couple of rules that I think will always give me an edge when it comes to SEO.

1. I Always develop good content with the end user and the search engines in mind.

No matter what, if the website doesn’t stink and it actually does what it is suppose to, eventually it will be a success. I would rather have 10 visitors where 8 were satisfied with their visit than 100 visitors where only 15 were satisfied. Of course 100 out of 100 would not be bad either ;) In the long term, creating a web presence that actually meets your end user’s need will gradually build brand, and we all know how brand can impact your rankings.

2. I Always add real value.

Turn an actual profit! A ranking that produces the wrong traffic is not what we’re after, we want that traffic to be of value. I recently heard somewhere that the value of a search engine visitor is $33 if you were to sale your website. That’s $33 for every visitor that comes to your site.

Are you making an average $33 per search engine visit? $33 is too high a goal? Ok, how about $1 per visitor? Set a goal for the value of your visitors and develop a plan with benchmarks to make it happen. Even if you fall short, you will be much better off.

When the next great SEO thing comes along…you know the one…the one that is going to make your rich. Maybe you should observe what happens to the other guys who jump before you do. You may already be on the path that is going to work for you and do not need to risk being gored by an enraged 1500 pound bull :)

  1. That picture is incredible!! Its distracting me from reading the post. Look at the faces of the people around! I bet if the bull landed on the guy underneath he’d be a gonner.

  2. Very nice and informative article.
Will remember all these points during my next work…
    Bookmarked this article…

    Thanks

  3. for me I take an extra careful step. That is letting others do it first and let us know what happend so I learn from their mistakes and success. I think it wont really matter if somebody else is a few notch ahead as long as I keep an eye on them.

  4. I like to do things that are known to work not new ideas but solid ones. Sometimes people look for the latest ideas to work for seo and find out they hurt site in the end. Great post like comparison to running with the bulls makes alot of sense.

  5. Dang that pic is crazy. I find that basic SEO practices still work the best - new SEO techniques seem to be hit or miss.

  6. That is one thing I completely agree with. I don’t go around swallowing other people’s seo advice. I thoroughly analyze something before I believe it. First of all I see the google terms of service. I ask myslef will this be perceived as spam?
Also many SEOs jump to a conclusion without the right mindset.
By that I mean. They may do a case study that has flaws and they didn’t realize that the reason it didn’t rank was not because of the method but because of the competition they were running up against.
A low quality link campaign may help me rank on a long tail keyword phrase that has little competition.
Now that low quality link back campaign may not move me up - not even one inch if I am competing with authority domains. It’s all so relative and so many factors to consider.
I totally agree with you that we need to have a personality and not run after whatever someone else is saying without thinking it through.
    All the best,

I saw Running With The Bulls at San Fermin in Pamplona, It is very risky. Any one can run in front of bulls, that have been let loose on the town’s streets. Actually these streets are sectioned off to guide the bulls from the corrals through a trail of streets. And finally end up in a bullring.

Eren, great insight. Good to hear from you. :)

  10. Nice pic really awesome site to see.

  11. There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points about how the home diy market works.

  12. You’ve got a very informative article.Your right, an individual should think logically in everything he does. There are other things that are profitable other than running with the Bulls.

  13. I love this - the only way to test out SEO is by trying it yourself. All I see everywhere on so called “seo” blogs is the same stuff being copied from other sites. The only way to find out if something is going to work is by running your own tests - the algorithem is always being updating and as soon as a hole is opened in it, usually patched up quick.

  15. Thank you for this post. It is really valuable. I am an SEO consultant too and always talk about the value of good content. The problem that i face is that once a site is established and I am brought in, clients are hesitant to put in new content. How do you approach a client and what do you require off them?
