Microsoft Makes Brilliant Play For Search Engine Market Share
Its typically not the guy with the best product that wins. Its the guy with a good product and great marketing that wins. This is true of Microsoft.
It wasn’t Gates programming abilities that made him the industry leader, it was actually his business acumen.
Bill Gates and the Microsoft team never intended to make an operating system. It just happened the only guy who had a good one at the time snubbed IBM. IBM did not take kindly to the snubbing, so they asked a young Gates to provide one for their new PC. Gates simply licensed one for $50,000 and the rest is history.
It appears Microsoft might be applying that same principle here:
Microsoft will pay News Corp to de-index themselves in Google
Microsoft has had discussions with News Corp over a plan that would involve the media company being paid to “de-index” its news websites from Google, setting the scene for a search engine battle that could offer a ray of light to the newspaper industry. (source)
Exclusivity is a great way to gain market share. If Microsoft is the only search engine to incorporate News Corp stories, it gives them a unique way to display content that Google could never have access too.
It also gives content based website more leverage with Google and other search engines. Google has never been short of quality content to display in their search engine. If quality content started drying up because large content providers brokered similar deals, Google would be forced to listen to the demands of publishers whose content Google is able to monetize currently.
This coupled with Bing’s recent launch and innovate search interfaces has probably given Google its first serious challenge in years. Something that would be good for search and SEO in my opinion. Who knows, maybe Google would no longer be able to set all the rules to this game.

yes Microsoft is already to step into SE to compete Google, they are investing a huge amount of money for this project, let’s see what they can do to kick off Google.
In June, Google CEO Eric Schmidt had these comments to make regarding Google’s position in the market: “We are spending all of our time on exactly what we’ve always done, which is innovation. I don’t think Bing’s arrival has changed what we’re doing. We are about search, we’re about making things enormously successful, by virtue of innovation.

Nice blog article Jason.
Never thought these words would be coming out of my mouth but for once I find myself actually rooting for MS. Not because I am terribly pleased with them as a company but just for the simple fact that I believe that healthy competition benefits everyone-Google included.
That Google’s most recent innovations with live search (the twitter announcement http://mashable.com/2009/10/21/google-twitter-search-deal/) came on the heels of Bing’s entry into the market is proof that Google is at the very least somewhat concerned about losing search market share.
As for the News Corp deal it was only a matter of time before this was going to happen. Schmidt’s flippant responses to the Associated Press along with News Corp about Google News’s content syndication has gotten a lot of high powered traditional media folks frowning. It would be interesting if this was the loose thread that unravelled the entire ball of yarn.
@Frank, I thought they always were trying to “not be evil” and their mission was to index every bit of information on the web. Didn’t Rupert Murdoch command this action? Wasn’t being discussed a few months ago?

Since Microsoft and Apple are life long competitors there might be iSearch?? coming soon. Steve owns a part of Google but Apple itself makes no direct revenue from it. Ofcourse there is a lot of co-operation between Google and Apple but if you remember what happened when Apple last made a joint venture with a cell phone company… iPhone was later introduced… So I think they really try to learn what they can from Google and then make teir move.
@hääkuvaus
I wasn’t aware that Jobs owned significant shares in Google, but either way I agree that it doesn’t seem like this deal will generate any fall out for Apple.
If anything, like Jason said the move could help to level the search field and help open up more opportunities for SEOs.

Microsoft is renowned for their innovative marketing strategies, but this going several steps ahead and has kindled all new meaning for marketing. I have never come across a company paying to get them de-indexed. Really curious to follow up on this strategy.. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Microsoft’s Bing has a 3% share of search, whereas Google holds about a 90% share.
Actually, I think Bing’s search share has increased to around 10%.
