4 Profitable Benefits of Having a Professionally Designed Website

It is surprising how many webmasters still do not see the value in a professionally designed website. Many people feel content to use a free or even premium template, with very little additional customization. While using a template may seem alright in the beginning, if you want people to take your website seriously, you need to take your website seriously. Here are some of the most prominent benefits of having a professional website design for your website.

5 Common Web Design SEO Mistakes

Many of today’s web designers and developers have a good understanding and appreciation of SEO (search engine optimization) and its commercial significance. Nevertheless, I routinely work on websites that appear to have been built with very little SEO consideration so I thought I’d share just a handful of the most common issues that I’ve had to deal with over the past couple of months.

Choosing the Right Hosting Solution for your Blog

As a blogger, it is important that you choose the correct hosting options that match your overall goals. Especially if you plan to build traffic, you need a scalable hosting solution that can grow with you and your blog.

Linux vs. Windows Hosting

There has been debate for years over which web server operating system is better. It still depends on who you ask, but there are several factors to take into account.

Windows does not support the popular programming language, PHP, out of the box. PHP is used for popular applications such as Wordpress and Joomla. In order to use PHP, you must install a special module. All though linux also requires a PHP installation, most hosting companies will make sure all of their linux servers support PHP before they release it to their clients.

One important SEO factor to take into account is that linux servers easily support nice URLs. Configuring a windows server to show search engine friendly URLs can be incredibly difficult, especially for a novice programmer. (more…)

Introduction to PHP Functions

This is an introduction into the world of PHP functions. The first progamming language I learned was PHP and having that knowledge has been extremely beneficial to me through my SEM career. It is always nice to be able to sit down at my computer at a moments notice and hack out a new idea or fix an issue without getting the developer involved.

One of the key issues many people face when learning a new programming language is object based programming. Instead of writing a script that simply executes in a vertical fashion (from top to bottom), being able to write functions to handle the same activity over and over again is very useful and can make programming much faster and decrease execution times.

When I first learned PHP, I programmed in this manner. From top to bottom. Over time, I discovered that functions and classes were really important and could make my scripts work so much better. Go ahead and take the time to figure out object based programming, you won’t regret it in the least.

Functions are a very important part of PHP and it is probably safe to say that they are used in every single script. This tutorial will guide you through the basics of PHP functions to creating your own to do specific tasks.

Functions: An Introduction

You have already used many functions with PHP. Every time you do:

Cloaking the Web World – A Warning

Has anyone ever approached you and asked you if you want a PR8 or 9 website, and have guaranteed it within a couple of months? If they have, then Burn their e-mail address and keep well away from them! Unless their name is Bill Gates and he has kindly offered you Microsoft’s website for £30!
The Technique:

There is a technique, deep in the heart of the Black Hat world of SEO known as “Cloaking”. This type of Tom Foolery is used by Black Hat SEOs all over the world to create “Fake” Page Rank. It is a ridiculously easy procedure to carry out, which is why it has become popular with those that want to gain Page Rank over a short period of time. Once they have managed this, a popular method to gain anything out of it, is to offer links to websites which “gag” for a high PR link for a small amount of cash. (more…)

There is nothing worse than not being able to log into your Wordpress install and the confirmation email system not working.  It happened to me today and so I thought I would share how to quickly and easily change your Wordpress password.

1. Log into your PHPmyAdmin control panel located inside of your server. Most hosting companies have a link to the database from within the panel.
